Something Extra – Summer Accessory Edit
Accessories may be smaller and feel less splashy than a bold maxi or tunic, but they can still have maximum impact on your style. A chic slide or signature scarf can give you top-to-toe style that’s still laid-back and low-key. “Especially in the summer, with everyone wearing less clothing, a great shoe or hat can pull together your whole look,” says Allison Engel, our VP of Accessory Design.
Our 2020 summer accessory collection is the boldest one yet, with our signature embroideries, bohemian aesthetic and artisan-inspired extras. Here’s a roundup of some of our key pieces and trends that we slipping into.
A Boho Slide
When social distancing went into full effect back in March, something interesting happened, the sale of the traditional Birkenstock went up two-fold in some areas. All of sudden everyone wanted serious comfort with a side order of style. “I absolutely love our Embroidered Buckle Slide,” says Allison of the Johnny Was version of this classic shoe. “The camo is a huge trend this summer and the bold embroidery gives these our signature spin.” For footwear with a Southwestern flair, there’s also the Studded Buckle Slide that is crafted in a luxe, caramel suede with a sprinkling of turquoise gems.
If you prefer a slide that’s more streamlined opt for a covered slide like our Studded or Embroidered Mule. These are great if you need a shoe that’s more day-to-night since the sleek style feels super chic. “I love this type of slide with a relaxed wide-leg trouser,” says Allison, who recently paired her black, suede mule with our Palazzo Pant for local, weekend getaway with her husband and dog. “So chic, so comfortable.”
The ultimate summer shoe has long been the espadrille. This classic canvas style has been around in Spain (where ours are made) and France since the 14th century (i.e. they are timeless). The secret is the comfort of a cotton canvas upper paired with the traditional, woven jute sole. To put our own spin on this trend, we added a bold embroidery across the top to the Embroidered Espadrille. “Mine have become my version of a slipper,” says Allison. “But one that I can leave the house in.” We style these on the casual side, and love them with a cropped jogger, legging or beach-ready kaftan.
Nowadays you can wear sneakers with anything—from leggings to suits—so it makes sense to add few different styles to go with your mood. For running errands, or a neighborhood walk, we love the Embroidered Canvas Sneaker with its on-trend camouflage, as well as our signature butterfly flourish on the side. For something a little bolder, our Embroidered Leather Sneaker is set to become a Johnny Was classic. “The silhouette of retro sneakers from the 70’s is so hot right now,” says Allison. “It’s less chunky than a pure athletic sneaker and my favorite way to wear this one is with jeans and a tee.” The epitome of style and comfort.
