Fall Book Report: Our Favorite Coffee Table ReadsAugust 24 2018
Essentials in our Century City store: the Bennai Fringe Duster and Modern Havana by Michael Connors.
One of the best things about fall and the pending holidays is that it’s the time of year when book publishers dish out all of their best coffee table books. Aside from being a lovely pop of eye candy in your decor, they are also one of the greatest gifts, and there is one for everyone regardless of taste or hobby. “I love giving gifts that inspire and educate,” says Steve Salardino, manager of Skylight Books, one of our favorite indie bookstores in Los Angeles. “A great coffee table book can be returned to again and again, viewed at your leisure and really studied, and especially when it comes to art or design, it’s the next best thing to buying the real deal.”
We also love to accessorize our Johnny Was stores with books for this exact reason. While always inspired by travels, museum trips, galleries and strong women everywhere, getting lost in a great book has a quiet beauty unto itself. “For the Johnny Was stores we pick titles that are as unique as our clothes, often art, fashion, and lifestyle,” says Rebecca Roggenstroh, who is one of the bookworms behind our curated collections. So, if you’re looking for a little inspiration for your home, closet, next vacation or just a great gift idea, here are a few of the books we want to give, receive and spend some time with.
Slim Aarons: Women by Laura Hawk (Abrams) – “One of the most influential photographers of all time shares his portraits of women in high society, fashion, the arts and Hollywood. This is an eye-candy time capsule of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s,” says Rebecca.
The Wild Horses of Sable Island by Robert Dutesco (teNeues) – “Sable Island is off of Nova Scotia and almost solely inhabited by wild horses. The photographs in this book are stunning and story is even more interesting,” says Rebecca.
Free Hand New Typography Sketchbooks by Steven Heller and Lita Talarico (Thames & Hudson) – “For graphic designers, this is an incredible look at typefaces and makes me want to sit and hand draw alphabets all day,” says Steve.
Rock the Boat: Boats, Cabins and Homes on the Water (Gestalten) – “You’ll be inspired to design your own houseboat after looking at this gorgeous volume,” suggests Steve.
Island Life: Inspirational Interiors by India Hicks (Harry N. Abrams) – “This gorgeous book gives us serious get-away-from-it-all fantasies and designer India Hicks has the most inimitable style,” recommends Rebecca.
