Shop Women's Clothing Basics by Johnny Was
Every piece in our new wardrobe essentials collection starts with fabric and ours begins at the source. Woven in a European mill, our Soft Touch knit (94% Viscose, 6% Elastane) is buttery-smooth, colorfast, and engineered never to lose its shape. Our French Terry pieces offer that same luxurious exterior feel with a brushed interior for just the right amount of warmth without the weight.
These are seasonless layering pieces. Light enough for a California summer evening, substantial enough for a crisp morning inland. They're meant to move through your day the way you do, from coast to city and back again.
How to Wear Your Essentials
The real power of a wardrobe essential is its range. Here's how to make each Johnny Was piece work with your everyday style:
• Essential Tees: Layer a Soft Touch Tank under a printed kimono or embroidered jacket for instant texture contrast.
• Hoodies: Wear a zip-front hoodie over a floral dress for a casual cool-weather look that still feels polished.
• Lounge Pants: Pair wide-leg lounge pants with a crew neck tee and slides for a put-together traveling outfit.
• Outerwear: Throw a French Terry Blazer Jacket over anything — a slip dress, printed pants, or your favorite denim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the fabric, fit, and styling of your Johnny Was wardrobe essentials.
What is included in the Johnny Was Wardrobe Essentials collection?
The Wardrobe Essentials collection includes soft everyday tees (tanks, crew necks, scoop necks, and elbow-sleeve styles), zip-front hoodies, wide-leg lounge pants, a one-button blazer, and a moto jacket. All pieces are made in luxury knits, soft touch viscose-elastane and French Terry, and designed to be worn year-round.
Are these pieces suitable for year-round wear?
Yes. The Essentials are designed as seasonless wardrobe staples. The Soft Touch knit is lightweight and breathable enough for warm weather, while the French Terry outerwear provides comfortable warmth for cooler days without feeling heavy.
What fabric are the Johnny Was Essentials made from?
Essentials tees and tanks are made from Soft Touch (94% Viscose, 6% Elastane) — a buttery-smooth, machine-washable knit that is colorfast, anti-microbial, and holds its shape wash after wash. Hoodies, lounge pants, and outerwear are made from French Terry (96% Viscose, 4% Elastane), featuring a smooth exterior and a soft looped or brushed interior.
Can I dress these essentials up for a nicer occasion?
Absolutely. The French Terry One-Button Blazer pairs effortlessly over printed dresses or trousers for a polished look. Essential tees layer beautifully under kimonos or embroidered jackets, and wide-leg lounge pants styled with a tucked-in tee read as elevated casual for dinner or a weekend outing.
How do Wardrobe Essentials fit into the Johnny Was aesthetic?
Unlike generic basics, Johnny Was Essentials carry subtle brand details, thoughtful trims, curated color stories, and elevated silhouettes that make them natural companions to the brand's signature printed kimonos, embroidered jackets, and floral dresses. They're designed to complete an outfit, not just fill it.
