Summer Scarf Style Guide

JUNE 17, 2022

One of the most versatile accessories in your style arsenal is a colorful scarf. Whether it’s knotted on top, around your neck, or even through your belt loops, it’s the quickest way to add a pop of summer to your style. Every collection we design contains a curated edit of our silk scarves and they have become synonymous with the Johnny Was ethos of beautiful, elegant, bohemian styles that you make your own. Since summer is the ideal time to tie one on, we’ve created an easy tutorial of some of our favorite ways to style our scarves.

A PERFECT DRAPE

Knotting a scarf around your neck is one of the quickest ways to elevate a casual look, whether it’s a tee and denim or you want to add a pop of color to a neutral-hued ensemble. To really showcase the color and design, start by folding the scarf in half (so it becomes a triangle), place the longest point right underneath your chin, and loop the edges around your neck, draping them loosely over the shoulders. The secret is to keep it very loose and relaxed for a chic print statement. Get the Look: Embroidered but mostly monochrome like with the Leafy Concetta Blouse or Irini Blouse.

SLEEK AND CHIC

Another way to make a silk scarf your favorite “neck-cessary” is to take a sleeker approach. The way we styled it feels like a modern nod to the 70s and it’s an effortless way to add a hint of prints to a casual daytime look. Grab your favorite Johnny Was scarf and lay it out on a flat surface. Next, take one corner and fold it into the middle and do the same with opposite corner (you are left with a hexagon shape). Keep folding the same two sides inward until you are left with a slim stripe. Pick it up, twist it a couple of times so it lays flat against the neck and knot it on the side. Get the Look: Have fun with the retro theme and style with the Sea Georgia Kimono and Sevilla Cropped Wide Leg Jean and your favorite wedge slides.

HAUTE HIPPY

Our roots are firmly grounded in bohemian and modern style and this chic topper speaks to both. Ideal for days at the beach or to add an elegant note to evening. Start by folding your scarf in half on the diagonal (so it’s a triangle). Next, take the long, straight edge and fold it back about an inch, as this should create a lovely contrast in the print and avoids too much fabric on your head. Place the middle of the straight edge on the forehead covering your hairline. Take the ends and knot them in the back, at the base of skull, letting the middle point of the scarf drape down. We love it with some asymmetry so lay all the ends over one shoulder. Get the Look: We’re bringing the color with the Florabelle Crochet Top but this scarf style would also look great with the Calanthe Cropped Kimono.

MIX, MATCH, TWIST

This look is so simple and really packs a punch. If you hair is on the longer side this look takes on a classic 60’s mod vibe, but it’s chic on any hairstyle. Start by folding your scarf in half diagonally, then begin to roll or fold the scarf, starting at the widest side and working your way in until you have a slim tube. You can knot the scarf in the middle of the tube after rolling it up to help it stay folded and add a bit more volume up top. Tie the loose ends under your hair at the nape of your neck and voilà! Get the Look: The scarf being a subtle statement, pair it with a bold blouse or tunic like our style pick, the Nadine Silk Shirt or the Liliana Oversized Weekend Tunic.
