When it comes to your beauty routine, one of our favorite makeup artists, Alicia Campbell has some pretty simple advice. “Lighten up,” she says. “When the temperatures climb up and the sun is brighter I like to switch to lightweight formulas with a hint of shimmer.” For our April catalog, she traveled with us to the gorgeous town of Ojai and made our models look like true natural beauties with hints of pink and bronze. We snooped inside her makeup bag and picked her brain for what to buy and how to apply.
“This is a totally fresh vibe that has just a hint of bohemian flair,” says Alicia. “Everyone looks great in some version of a pink but on her pale skin, I kept it really light.” Her number one go-to products for everyone and anyone is the new Kosas Tinted Face Oil (available at Sephora) because it’s a great natural base packed with lightweight jojoba oil, rosemary and sunflower extract and a hint of coverage. “Three dabs blended into your skin is all anyone needs,” says Alicia.
“For spring and summer looks, I love to blend everything using my fingers because it really makes everything look natural,” says Alicia. For the lips, her secret trick is the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask (available at Sephora) because it’s super nourishing (it’s actually a lip treatment that you’re meant to put on in the evening but the hint of pink makes it work for the day as pale gloss).
Style Tip: It doesn’t get much prettier than the Margot Ruffle Blouse.
“This whole look is a wash of bronze shimmer framed by a strong brow,” says Alicia. Her favorite brow pencil is Nars Brow Perfector pencil (at Sephora) because it has a little brush on the end that allows you to soften up your strokes. When it comes to mascara, Alicia says the key to a light looker look is finding the right brush, one with smaller bristles so you can really get close to the roots. Try Maybelline Lash Discovery Mini Brush mascara (pick the waterproof version if you suffer smears).
Style Tip: Days get lighter and so do our jackets like the Raisa Denim Jacket.
When taking a look from casual to slightly more glam, just pump up either eyes or lips. For the eyes, Alicia first had a matte shadow and then added a wash of bronze over the top. “If you sweat or are a little older and have looser skin on your lids, just keep the shimmer shadow close to the lash line so it won’t creep,” she advises. For lips, she chose eco-luxe Kari Gran Lip Whip in Masala (available at karigran.com).
Style Tip: The Maritzah Dress is the perfect afternoon-to-evening weekend look.
