We’ve become more mindful about what we put into our bodies—usually choosing organic produce and grass-fed proteins—so it’s about time we gave our hair the same type of love. Another brand that we’re excited to highlight in our Johnny Was Beauty & Wellness section is La Tierra Sagrada, a haircare company created by LA-based stylist, Sondra “Stefani” Padrilla. A holistic line comprised of naturally-derived ingredients, 100% recyclable packaging, as well as other thoughtful (and delicious) perks like scents that help to calm the nervous system and, of course, amazing hair. We checked in with Stefani to get her tips, thoughts and tricks on how to make the most of your hair.

JW: We love your products so much, when did you first decide to create La Tierra Sagrada?

SP: I created the line back in 2013 when a series of autoimmune issues caused me to suffer hair loss. At the time, I tried so many different products and it was really hard to find one that wasn’t packed with chemicals. From my years of experience as a stylist, I knew that natural oils and herbal remedies work the best, so I began the line as a way to heal myself.

JW: What was the most difficult part about making natural products?

SP: The biggest challenge so far is to keep the integrity, while also growing as a business. I spend a lot of time searching for clean chemists that truly understand the importance of clean ingredients. The line got written up in Vogue in 2014, and it still took me two more years to formulate a shampoo and conditioner that was clean enough for my standards. The Masque took even longer, until 2019.

JW: What’s your favorite product?

SP: Hands down, our Repair Masque—I have never used anything better. It replenishes moisture and makes hair extra shiny with ingredients like Black Cumin Seed Oil, which soothes the scalp and Tacuma Seed Butter, which is ultra-hydrating. I like to leave it on for 10 minutes and use a wide-tooth comb to distribute it evenly. Especially as a mom with postpartum hair, I don’t think I could have survived without it. It seriously transforms your hair!

JW: Any other tips when using your products?

SP: With the shampoo, a little goes a long way since we don’t water down our products. Focus on really stimulating your scalp by massaging it with your fingertips. For the conditioner, use it throughout the hair but avoid the scalp unless your hair is really thick and coarse. Apply it, comb through, and rinse.

JW: Hair loss issues are a common complaint for many women, what other tips do you have for those suffering from thinning strands?

SP: First of all, check with your health care provider to make sure all your vitals are OK. For general hair health, I like Biotin [a vitamin B complex], adaptogens [which help the body with stress] and Omegas found in fish oils or flax oil. All these things provide hydration, strength and shine.

JW: Finally, who is your hair muse?

SP: I have so many! Vintage Marianne Faithful for bangs, Kate Moss for that wash-and-wear look, Zendaya for natural hair, and Penelope Cruz for the ultimate, long, and sexy hair.
