Welcome to one of our favorite parts of California, Montecito, a gorgeous beach community in Santa Barbara County. Not only was it named one of the best places to travel in 2019 by Travel + Leisure magazine, but it also does effortless chic better than any other town we know. Surprised we just opened up a Johnny Was store in this sunny enclave? Of course not.

On a gorgeous April evening, we welcomed the neighbors to our charming Coast Village Road store (there’s even an ocean view from the second floor). Hosted by actor Billy Baldwin and his wife Chynna Baldwin, the evening was packed with shopping, conversation, cocktails, and music. To give you a snapshot of all things Montecito, we asked our store manager Vanessa Lynn, for the inside scoop on what people are wearing, eating and doing around town.

The store just opened, which Johnny Was pieces have been the most popular?

VL: Everything that my team wears to work sells out within the first week—a lot of the styles feel like resort wear but they’re for every day which is perfect for Montecito. Our clients love the silk kimonos, dusters, and dresses; I wore the Geles V-Neck Dress for the party, which is one of my personal favorites from the current collection.

How did you hook up with Billy and Chynna Baldwin to host the launch party?

VL:  Our CEO, Rob Trauber, is friends with Billy and Chynna Baldwin. I first met Billy when we were setting up the store before opening. He is funny, handsome, and very well known around town, and not to mention cute! I had so much fun helping Chynna pick out an outfit for the party and she wore the Rita Knot Tie T-shirt.

What other touches made the evening special?

VL: We partnered with a local winery called Margerum and it’s always fun to have some local flavor showcased. The food was catered by The Monarch, which is one of the best restaurants in Montecito. Margarita, the chef's wife, and a former Johnny Was model, is their pastry chef and made the most incredible bon bons filled everything from Marcona almonds and honey to passion fruit. She also wore the Raisa Denim Jacket which has been a huge seller for spring.

It was so fun! Tell us what else to do in Montecito?

VL: One of my favorites beaches to go to is Butterfly Beach or Hendry’s Beach which is the only off-leash dog beach in Santa Barbara. If you’re looking for a bite to eat, I love Jeannine's or the Honor Bar for brunch, and during the summer it’s such much fun going to concerts at the Santa Barbara Bowl.

So, if you’re in and around Santa Barbara stop by and say hello to Vanessa and all the other lovelies at Johnny Was Montecito.  And if you’re curious what’s in store, here’s a sampling of our latest collection.
